At a summit in Brussels, the leaders of the European Union countries approved the candidacies of the bloc’s leaders.
The EU has a new, although more correctly, updated leadership. President of the European Commission will replace Charles Michel as President of the European Council, and current Estonian Prime Minister Kaia Kallas will become the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs instead of Josep Borrell. All three candidates are centrist politicians and members of moderate parties.
Kaia Kallas, the first woman to become prime minister of Estonia, was a darling at home and across Europe for her liberal views, commitment to European values and her unwavering support for Ukraine after Russian aggression. Kallas is an outspoken critic of the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin.
Russian authorities have put her on a wanted list for the dismantling of monuments to Soviet soldiers in Estonia during her term.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the appointment to the EU leadership on Friday, bluntly stated that “the prospects for relations between Moscow and Brussels are poor.” Meanwhile, Kallas said her appointment was “a huge responsibility at a time of geopolitical tension” and thanked her colleagues for their trust.
One of her first tasks is to find ways for Brussels to continue supporting Kyiv. António Costa for almost nine years, resigning in April this year. He is a lawyer by education and a socialist by conviction.
Costa expressed his approval of the nominations of Kaia Kallas and von der Leyen: “I am sure that our cooperation will be very successful in our service to Europe and to European citizens.”
He said that he accepted the nomination for the new position with gratitude, although it comes at a time of testing not only for Europe but also for the whole world.
” I take up my post in December, the main task of which is to implement the strategic agenda that the European Council has approved. today,” Antonio Costa said on Friday.
Roberta Metsol, who, like von der Leyen, represents the EPP group, is expected to be re-elected as President of the European Parliament for a new term; however, this decision remains with the European Parliament. “On November 12, a bilateral meeting between Ukraine and the European Commission on Chapter 18, dedicated to statistics, concluded in Luxembourg. The meeting took place within the framework of the official screening of Ukrainian legislation for compliance with EU law,” the report said.
Over the course of two days, the Ukrainian delegation presented to the European Commission and colleagues from Eurostat the status of the implementation of EU law in state statistical activities and the capabilities of Ukraine’s state statistics bodies.
